I joined the teaching profession later than most, having first started pursuing a career as a scientist. What became increasingly clear is that I had the mindset for science, but a passion for teaching – so, after being the first of my family to move to the UK, 30 odd years ago I started my career as a physics and maths teacher.
Since that point I have progressed to become the CEO of West Suffolk College, a WorldskillsUK Centre of Excellence, and Suffolk Academies Trust – which includes the Outstanding One Sixth Form College and Abbeygate Sixth Form College, a free school opened in 2019. While outcomes across both organisations are something I am immensely proud of, I am also passionate about our escalator model. This is our work bringing together all phases of education across the Eastern region, from primary to HE and apprenticeships, to help raise aspiration as well as performance.
I believe passionately that decisions should be driven by what is morally the right things to do – not politics (with a small p) – and the scientist in me bases decisions on data and an understanding of what works. That is the thinking I will bring.
