Candidate Eligibility

Nominations Criteria

To be able to stand as a candidate for one of the eight Advisory Boards (ABs) in England, candidates must have met one criterion from the following:

  • be currently serving as a headteacher of an academy judged by Ofsted as Outstanding overall on the day before candidate nominations commence;
    OR
  • be currently serving as a headteacher of an academy judged by Ofsted as Good overall with outstanding leadership and management on the day before candidate nominations commence;
    OR
  • have been a CEO of an academy trust for at least two years on the day before candidate nominations commence;
    OR
  • have retired from the headship of an academy in the past two years (on the day before candidate nominations commence) and met either of the first two criteria above at the time of your departure;
    OR
  • have served as a headteacher of an academy, which met either of the first two criteria above at the time of your departure, and you are now serving as a trust Senior Executive Leader* (SEL). *as defined by the Academy Trust Handbook.

There are also some conditions:

  • A headteacher or a retired headteacher must work/have worked at an academy in the same region as the board they are standing for election.
  • CEOs and Senior Executive Leaders are only permitted to stand for election in a region in which they have an academy/academies.
  • No more than one headteacher, CEO or Senior Executive Leader per academy trust can be elected to any one AB.
  • Headteachers from the same trust can be elected to different ABs if the trust operates across more than one region.


Disqualifications

Apart from meeting the criteria for standing for election, candidates must also be in good standing in the school community and not be disqualified from standing at the time of nomination, polling and on the day results are announced.

Candidates were asked to check they met the 'suitability of members and disqualification' standards set out in the Terms of Reference for ABs.
