Voting in the election

The Council of the Chartered College of Teaching plays a significant role in guarding the mission, setting the strategy and long-term direction of the Chartered College, and evaluating performance against targets. The Council also supports the Chartered College’s Executive Leadership Team. The Council comprises:

  • The President (appointed following period as President-Elect)
  • President-Elect (appointed)
  • Treasurer (appointed)
  • Vice President (elected)
  • Vice President (elected)
  • Council members, of which a majority shall be elected as defined in Bye Law 14.
As defined in the Chartered College of Teaching’s Bye Laws, ‘the Council comprises those who shall be elected by the members, who shall always be a majority of the Council, and those who shall be appointed by the Council itself to provide expertise or experience not otherwise available.’

In the 2023 elections there are two contests: the Vice President contest (two positions open – one of which is a bye election) and the Council member contest (six elected Council member positions open for election). Please use your vote to help elect an effective Council of the Chartered College of Teaching.

Am I eligible to vote in the Chartered College of Teaching Council elections and if so how many votes will I have?

All full Members and Fellows are able to vote in the elections (this includes Members who pay the Early Career Teacher subscription rate). Members and Affiliates (this includes Historical, Professional and International Affiliates) are not eligible to vote. UK Engage will send each Member and Fellow a Unique Security Code (USC) which must be used to vote. If you do not receive this please contact [email protected].

Why can't Affiliates, Associates and Student Members vote in the election?

Bye law 2 (ii) of the Chartered College of Teaching refers to the non-voting individual supporters of the Chartered College, including Associates and Affiliates. The Membership Handbook states that ‘Affiliates, Students and Associates are non-voting members of the Chartered College.’ This includes Historical, Professional and International Affiliates.

How can I vote?

UK Engage has been appointed to run the election process on behalf of the Chartered College of Teaching. All votes will be cast online through this website on the electronic voting page. There will be no postal voting.

The online poll opens at 09:00 BST on Monday 16 October 2023 and will close at 17:00 GMT on Friday 3 November 2023. Before voting, please read the candidate statements for each contest. Please note that, once submitted, votes cannot be amended.

Why am I unable to submit a postal vote?

It is the Chartered College of Teaching’s policy to minimise spending whenever possible to protect funds for charitable purposes and safeguard income from members, and the costs of printing and postage are significant. Using a secure website for the elections enhances the security and reliability of the election process.

I've paid for my membership, why haven’t I received an email?

You should have received an email from UK Engage with your Unique Security Code. Please check your spam folder if you have not received this in your inbox. If you cannot find the email, please contact [email protected].

I've just joined the Chartered College as a member – when will I receive my email?

The Chartered College will send UK Engage details of new members in batches up until Wednesday 1 November 2023 and so the deadline for new members to join and be able to vote is 08:00 GMT on Wednesday 1 November 2023. You will receive the email from UK Engage with your Unique Security Code as soon as UK Engage receives this information. Members who join after this point will not be able to vote in the 2023 election.

How do the votes determine the winners?

The voting method used in the election of the Vice President and the Council of the Chartered College of Teaching is Single Transferable Vote (STV).

What happens if a post is uncontested?

If there are fewer candidates than positions available, then the Returning Officer will declare at the AGM that the candidates are elected.

What if I don’t want to vote for any candidates?

Voters have the option to actively abstain from voting for all / some of the candidates.

For how long will elected Council members hold office?

The six Council Member positions up for election in 2023 will hold office for a term of four years. One Vice President position up for election in 2023 will hold office for a term of four years and one Vice President position up for election in 2023 will hold office for a term of two years. Of the two Vice President candidates elected, the preferred candidate through the Single Transferable Vote (STV) method will be given the longer term of four years.

How do I provide feedback or make a complaint?

The Chartered College of Teaching is committed to fair and transparent processes and procedures and welcomes feedback so that we can improve the process in subsequent years. Complaints about any aspect of the election process will be monitored, recorded and promptly handled. Nominations open on 11 September 2023. Nominees are required to complete and submit all applicable sections of the electronic nomination form online by 17:00 BST on 6 October 2023. This includes your nomination being proposed by another Member or Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching by 17:00 BST on 6 October 2023. How can I stand for the role of President-Elect?

The role of President-Elect is an appointed and not an elected role. Fellows on the Council are able to apply for the role of President-Elect through an application process. The next application round for the President-Elect role will open at the very end of 2024, with the next appointment to be made by Council in spring 2025.
