Jan RICHARDS (Australia)

Position Director
Organisation Jan Richards Consulting
Motivation statement

I am passionate about libraries, and am committed to actively participating in my profession, both in Australia , and internationally. I have been an engaged and enthusiastic IFLA member since 2011:

• Public Libraries Standing Committee, 2011-2019 (Chair, Secretary, Information Coordinator) • Literacy and Reading Standing Committee, 2019 + (Information Coordinator)
• Committee on Standards, 2013-2017 (Chair)
• Chair Division 1 (2021)

Through my work across these Committees, I have a strong knowledge of the IFLA environment, having partnered with many of the other professional units in: developing congress, mid-term and satellite programs; delivering initiatives such as the IFLA/Systematic Public library of the Year Awards; and in reaching consensus on standards and guidelines.

I was privileged to be part of the Global Vision process and am excited by the opportunities our new governance structure holds for a more streamlined and collaborative IFLA.

I have had extensive experience (30 + years) at a senior management level, and a strong record of working with government and advocating for libraries. In 2020 I made the change into consultancy and thrive on working with colleagues, giving them the skills and confidence to make positive change. Although I have a strong association with the public library sector, I have worked closely with other areas of the profession over many years and have an understanding of the challenges they face.

I am an active member of the Australian library community and am a past President and Fellow of the Australian Library and Information Association, and have been recognised by the profession and the Australian government for my contribution to librarianship.

I would welcome the chance to use my strong communication and engagement skills to create a collaborative and supportive environment within the Division. I believe I have the skills and energy to achieve this.
